A classic
The mountain you can see from the city
Known for its proximity to San Sebastián, from where its summit is visible, Adarra draws plenty of visitors all year round, with the hamlet of Besabi (Urnieta) the favourite starting point for its best-known route.
This route is considered a classic by those who know the mountains. From the summit you'll be rewarded with stunning views over Donostialdea and its surroundings.

Route
The route step by step
Start at Besabi
In Besabi, opposite the restaurant forecourt, the road forks. We take the recently tarmacked track on the right, which leads to the Montefrío farmhouse.
Onto the path to Adarra
Opposite the Montefrío house, on a wide bend, a gate in the fence on the right takes us onto the waymarked path that leads towards Adarra.
Through beech and pine
The first few metres run through beech trees. Then, as the path levels out beside a pine wood, we take the cobbled turning on the left that heads into the forest after crossing another fence (estimated time: 0 h 10 min).
Mantale col
The pines give way to beeches and the path turns right (SW) towards the Mantale col. Nearby we cross a stream over stones and tackle a short but steep rise to reach the col (0 h 30 min).
Ascent to the summit
From the col you can see Adarra's twin summit (S). The path climbs relentlessly, passing through a gap between the two summit crags to reach a shelf from which the rocky summit appears on the left (1 h 00 min).
The ascent involves tackling 250 metres of climb up the seemingly endless summit slope. Take it easy and enjoy the scenery that reveals itself as you climb.
Getting there
Besabi is about 15 km from San Sebastián. You can get there by car via Urnieta (GI-3410 road) or by combining the Euskotren train to Urnieta with a walk up to Besabi.
- Very popular at weekends: get there early to park
- Picnic area and restaurant at the starting point
- Ideal for a foggy day on the coast: it's usually clear up here
